WHY IS THE AFRICAN IDENTITY IMPORTANT

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO HAVE AN AFRICAN IDENTITY

It is very important to have the African identity. Throughout history, Africa has seen an extensive amount of change and many others passing through. But what has always maintained is that of the African identity in the diversity of the people and the variation they have.  Africa itself before the oncoming of colonialism had already been holding many different kingdoms with differing backgrounds of origin. And with these differing origins comes different ideas, values and most importantly cultures. In earlier times, Africans, trying to form their own identity, showed to have held significant importance in one’s culture. It was at this point of history that oral tradition was held in great ideal in many areas of Africa to hold one community’s history and their beliefs. In terms of African identity, establishing and fully owning our identity is important for our political, economic and social progression. In the past, Africa hasn’t had control over how we’re perceived and how we’re represented. That is changing slowly but it is changing

What are the elements of African identity

African identities, like African languages, are inventions, mutually constitutive existential and epistemic constructions. Invention implies a history, a social process; it denaturalizes cultural artifacts and practices, stripping them of primordial authenticity and essentialism.
